On January 21, 2025, Atlanta experienced an unusual snowstorm that began around 2:00 PM and lasted until 5:00 PM. The storm quickly covered the city, creating hazardous road conditions and leaving many commuters stranded. The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning, and officials pressed residents to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.
Crews worked ahead of this storm by treating highways, bridges, and overpasses with brine to reduce icing. But, the rapid snowfall overwhelmed preparations, and driving conditions quickly worsened. Freezing temperatures that came left black ice on roads and bridges, making travel dangerous for days.
This storm affected more than just Atlanta. Central and southern Georgia experienced even heavier snowfall, prompting a state of emergency. Other southern states including Texas and Louisiana, also faced disruptions, with snow in cities like Houston and New Orleans. Airports in Houston cancelled, flights leaving travelers stranded.
Mark Maloney, a motorist stuck on I-75 in Monroe County, described as 12-hour ordeal: “We stopped for lunch, and then traffic just didn’t move. I’ve never experienced anything like this in my whole life.” Emma Worley, who spent 15 hours in her car, added,” It’s hard to explain. I’ve never been through something like this before.” Both were among hundreds stranded due to icy conditions, crashes, and abandoned vehicles.
Officials shared tips to help residents stay safe during the storm, including wearing warm layers, eating hot meals, and keeping pets indoors. Homeowners were advised to insulate pipes and check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to prevent additional issues from freezing temperatures.
While snowstorms like this are rare in Atlanta, this event served as a reminder of how quickly winter weather can cause widespread challenges in areas unaccustomed to it. The city’s residents and emergency crews showed resilience in adapting to these unusual conditions.
